(10-06-13) More Berry-Good News For Your Brain
Recent research out of Tufts University and the University of Maryland at
Baltimore has shown that eating more blueberries and strawberries helps with
cognitive function and improves behavior in stressed lab animals. After 30
days on a strawberry/blueberry diet, and then undergoing brain irradiation, lab
animals experienced much more protection against the radiation than the control
animals. The researchers speculate that it’s due to the phytonutrients
contained in the berries and their anti-inflammatory benefits.
Berries promote a process called “autophagy” in which the brain manufactures
compounds which degrade, synthesize and clear toxic accumulations of proteins
on the brain. Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases have shown an increased
accumulation of these proteins.
"We have a lot of animal work that suggests these compounds will protect the
aged brain and reverse some of behavioral deficits. We are hoping it will
translate to human studies as well," said Dr. Barbara Shukitt-Hale, the lead
investigator conducting the human study.
