(02-09-06) Absence Of Carbohydrate Trigger Helps Reduce Obesity

Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer
Washington, DC (AHN) - A study done on mice shows that the absence of Carbohydrate Response Element Binding Protein or ChREBP cuts triglycerides, and lessens resistance to insulin and keeps normally obese mice from turning fat.
The study was done by researchers at the University of Texas, Katsumi Iizuka, Bonnie Miller and Kosaku Uyeda of the UT Southwestern Medical Center, in Dallas. They discovered that ChREBP plays a significant role not only in metabolism but also in appetite control.
Uyeda was quoted by Asia News International as saying, "These results show the important role ChREBP plays in metabolism and appetite control in mice and, presumably, humans. Ultimately we hope to develop drugs to inactivate and control ChREBP to overcome these two major health problems of obesity and diabetes."
Uyeda added, "We found that the group (that did not have ChREBP) did not become obese, had lower blood glucose levels than the obese group and were less insulin resistant. We also were very surprised to find that these mice ate much less than the obese mice of the second group."
He said, "These results show the important role ChREBP plays in metabolism and appetite control in mice and, presumably, humans. Ultimately we hope to develop drugs to inactivate and control ChREBP to overcome these two major health problems of obesity and diabetes."
