as presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology
Vegetarians may be at greater risk of visual field abnormalities, perhaps related to glaucomatous disease, according to a study presented at AAO, held in November in Las Vegas.
Researchers at the University of California at San Francisco evaluated the relationship between vegetarianism and glaucoma prevalence. They assessed all participants of the 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey without diabetic retinopathy.
Following data analysis, they found among the 1430 participants 60 years or older who underwent frequency doubling technology testing, a logistic regression model that adjusted for potential confounding variables showed a greater likelihood of a visual field abnormality in self-identified vegetarians compared to non-vegetarian controls (OR 2.12).
