(17-01-07) Scientists link acid reflux with obesity

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say they have linked gastroesophageal reflux disease -- commonly known as acid reflux -- with obesity.

Since acid reflux is strongly associated with more serious conditions -- such as esophageal ulcers and cancer -- weight reduction therapy might be useful in treatment and prevention of those conditions, said study author Dr. Douglas Corley of Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, Calif., and with the division of gastroenterology at the University of California-San Francisco.
"The condition is very common but previous studies have not been successful at pinpointing risk factors for the condition," said Corley. "Because we reviewed the results of 20 studies on the subject, we were able to better identify and understand the association between obesity and acid reflux."
The study appears in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
