(21-07-2017) California Requires Cancer Labels for Roundup Herbicide
Monday, July 17, 2017
It’s no longer up for debate: glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer, causes cancer. Despite Monsanto’s vehement stance that Roundup is safe in small doses, it has long been suspected that this commonly used herbicide has serious health and environmental consequences.
Research and lab testing has shown a connection between glyphosate and mitochondrial damage, gluten intolerance, various cancers, leaky gut syndrome, depression, Alzheimer’s, autism, and more. As more than 800 patients with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma step forward claiming that Roundup caused their cancer, the state of California is stepping up to take action and shine awareness on the health risks of glyphosate.
The Right to Know
Proposition 65 is a “right-to-know†law that California passed back in 1986 that requires businesses to properly warn consumers of chemicals on a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other potential reproductive harm. The list contains a wide range of chemicals found in pesticides, common household products, food, drugs, dyes, or solvents including formaldehyde, arsenic and tobacco smoke, for instance. Recently, California’s Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) announced that glyphosate was to be added to the proposition 65 list.
Very Real Risks
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) reports that glyphosate use has increased exponentially since the 1990’s. Because glyphosate products are used on our crops and food supply, we are surrounded by the chemical daily. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set the allowable daily intake (ADI) of glyphosate at 1.75mg per Kilogram of body weight per day. However, independently commissioned lab testing showed that glyphosate was found at detectable levels in breakfast foods, breastmilk, urine, blood, animal organs, rain, streams and air. Since it is found everywhere, it is likely that Americans are being exposed to higher amounts of glyphosate than the EPA recommends. This becomes particularly problematic for babies and children with underdeveloped detoxification systems. It has now been confirmed that glyphosate crosses the placenta.
How to Protect Yourself
Glyphosate is a very real threat to the health of Americans, but there are things you can do to protect yourself. Follow these tips and reduce your glyphosate intake and protect your body.
1. Eat organic and non-GMO. The widespread use of chemical herbicides and pesticides on crops by commercial farmers is rampant and it is a main way we are exposed to glyphosates on a daily basis. Crops commonly treated with Roundup include corn, sugar beets, soybeans, sugar cane, sorghum, cotton, feed barley, alfalfa, flax, lentils, peas, sunflower, and canola. Every year the EWG tests for pesticide residues on common fruits and vegetables and publishes a list of the least and worst contaminated. Use the full list to buy organic where it counts.
2. Protect your liver.Even if you eat organic, glyphosate use on crops can lead to water and environment contamination. Even the air is toxic now. Your liver, the main detoxification organ, has to work full-time to deal with all the chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis. You can protect your liver and help it to keep up with the demands by supplementing with silymarin, dandelion root extract, NAC and sulfur.
3. Support mitochondria health. Glyphosate affects the powerhouses of cells, mitochondria. In petri dishes, isolated human cells of various types combined with glyphosate died due to extensive mitochondrial damage. To make up for exposure to toxic chemicals in the environment, nourish and protect your mitochondria with coenzyme Q10 ubiquinol, PQQ, B vitamins, magnesium, and NAC.
More research continues to show that glyphosate is harmful to human health. With its widespread use across America, it is likely that the average American has detectable levels of the cancerous herbicide in their body right now. California now requires products containing the chemical to be labeled as a cancer-causing substance, and we should all be more aware. Use the above tips to minimize your exposure as much as possible and protect your body from the toxic world we live in.
