New York, NY (AHN) - A recently conducted research study by U.S. scientists suggests that an increased dietary intake of copper in mice, especially those prone to heart disease, helps in reduction of date rate associated with this condition.
A team of scientists at the University of Louisville Medical Center and the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center gave copper supplements to mice and it relaxed the stress on their over-stressed hearts by preventing heart enlargement.
Furthermore, the copper also helped by restoring the proper heart function in the continually stressed condition. Stressed mice who were deprived of copper supplements suffered heart attacks.
The copper-rich diet works by increasing the production of a protein that promotes the growth of new blood vessels. According to reports, insufficient copper intake is associated with increases in cholesterol levels, clot formation, and heart disease.
The study, published online on March 5th in The Journal of Experimental Medicine, suggests that increasing copper intake, especially in people with heart diseases, might lower the associated mortality rate.
Experts recommend the human equivalent of the copper used in this study at about 3.0 mg/day. The current recommended daily intake for humans, however, is only 0.9 mg/day.
