(26-09-07) New Zealand May Label Obesity-Causing Foods
New Zealand's government may introduce a blanket traffic light system on foods, indicating the severity of foods in terms of fat, salt and sugar content. The decision will be made if companies do not voluntarily add safety labels.
According to the Health Ministry in New Zealand, more than half the population is overweight or obese, and the number in children has reached passed 30 per cent. The government labels will use red, yellow and green.
Red will be placed on foods that should only be consumed occasionally, such as chocolate. Yellow will be placed on foods that can be eaten "sometimes", such as pizza, and green will be placed on foods such as low-fat yogurt, to be eaten daily.
