(27-09-07) Obesity May Lead To Birth Defects
Obese mothers are more likely to have babies with severe birth defects such as missing limbs, malformed hearts and underdeveloped spinal cords.
A new report in the Journal of the American Medical Association was based on interviews of more than 10,000 women who had children with malformations between 1997 and 2002. The results were compared to more than 4,000 women who delivered healthy babies.
Mothers were more likely to be obese for babies with spina bifida or conditions that allow organs to move around inside the body or intestines to come out through the navel.
The authors said they were not sure why obesity would lead to those kinds of defects.
The report also noted that poverweight and obese women are known to be at risk for chronic diseases, infertility, irregular menstruation and complications during pregnancy. In 2003 and 2004, about 51 percent of women aged 20 to 39 were classified as overweight or obese.
