(24-11-05) Zone Diet takes a giant step forward
Research about the Zone Diet was among the highlights of the 2005 American Heart Association (AHA) meetings in Dallas. First, was an abstract on the use of the Zone Diet and fish oil to treat pediatric obesity, which was supported by the Inflammation Research Foundation. The research was one of the few that Medscape reported to its readers. Other interesting research included work from Tufts Medical School that demonstrated that only people following the Zone Diet had an increase in large, non-atherogenic LDL particles compared to those following the Atkins diet, Weight Watchers diet or the Ornish diet. Another important research item indicated that reducing the carbohydrate content and increasing the protein content to the levels of the Zone Diet decreased blood pressure and cholesterol levels compared to the AHA diet. Finally, there was a report from Japan that the combination of high-dose fish oil and statins demonstrated a significant improvement in cardiovascular mortality compared to statins alone. All in all, it was another giant step in the continuing medical acceptance of the Zone Diet.
