(07-10-08) The 4 Most Common Excuses for Not Getting Fit

by Sheryl Walters

Despite the many benefits of exercise, statistics show that most people's exercise consists of walking from desk to bathroom or changing the channel on the TV. Most people are desperate for the physical and mental pleasures that exercise will give them. Increased energy, better mood, fewer aches and pains, and prevention of illness are just some of the benefits to having a regular workout routine. However, a great percentage of people are just plain unmotivated about getting off the sofa and moving their bodies. Or they have short bursts of exercise, only to give up and slip back into laziness.

If you are one of these people, ask yourself what is keeping you from getting fit. Research shows that the following are the most common excuses for not joining a gym and getting some regular exercise:

1. I'm too out of shape to go to work out because I'll look like a fool at the gym.

I can't help but chuckle at this ironic excuse. However, Gym intimidation is a real issue for people. They think they've got to get themselves in "respectable shape" before they ever go to the gym.

Answer: Your journey towards health and fitness is most impressive of all.

2. I don't know what to do once I get there.

Although there is usually an orientation session to new members, additional instruction may not be available without paying extra. People need the support of a skilled trainer to feel inspired to work out.

Answer: Take advantage of the many classes that are provided at the gym. Yoga, Pilates, Abs, Aerobics, Cycling, etc. is the perfect way to make the transition into regular gym visits. After some time, save up and pay a personal trainer for another session.

3. I don't have time.

This is the most common excuse for not getting fit in the world.

Answer: Do you have time to look and feel the way you want? A little sacrifice of free time is well worth the blessings you'll receive when you look in the mirror and you feel fantastic.

4. Gyms are just too crowded.

Many people feel overwhelmed by the amount of people who are at the gym at the same time they are.

Answer: Try to go at less crowded times. If this is not a possibility, then enjoy the buzz and try to feed off the energy of others rather than getting annoyed by it.
