(12-11-10) Children's obesity may be costlier than aging population
BY MICHAEL CONNIDIS, VANCOUVER SUN
Re: Does increased health care spending make Canadians healthier?, Column,
Nov. 1.
In his column, Craig McInnes focuses on the aging population and the potential
for their natural decline in health to overburden the health care system as we
know it. This does not seem to be the case. Could it be that the health of the
seniors in our population is superior to the generations that will follow?
It would seem that the real threat to our health care system is the rise in
childhood obesity. Fat kids are emblematic of a society where physical
activities, such as playing outside, have become passe and the trend toward
inert activities such as gaming on computers are increasingly becoming the
norm.
I don't think we will have to wait until the pudgy generation hits their
senior years before we see our health care system overburdened with inactive,
overweight people with a history of preventable health problems.
