(09-12-10) Obesity May Be Cause of Osteoporosis in Women

While some have previously that being overweight actually protects against
osteoporosis, HealthDay News reports that this may not be the case. In fact,
fat deposits located between the organs in the abdominal cavity may be
responsible for the disease.
Researchers assessed 50 overweight women and determined that those who had
more fat in this particular region were also more likely to have lower bone
mineral density.
"All fat isn't the same. Tummy fat has a damaging effect on bone health," the
study's lead author, Dr. Miriam Bredella, told the news provider.
The average body mass index (BMI) for the women was 30, ranging from 19 to 46.
A Normal BMI is around 18 to 24.9.
The midsection deposits, called visceral fat, have also been linked to heart
disease, diabetes and the release of fatty acids into the liver, according to
Bredella.
"This study is more bad news for obesity. The one good thing we thought
obesity might do- protect the bones ? isn't true," she said.
A proper diet can help prevent or delay the onset of osteoporosis. Food that
is rich in magnesium, calcium, phosphate and potassium can be especially
important, as well as a steady diet of fruits and vegetables, according to
