(15-03-11) Liposuction: Not the Only Way to Lose Weight
With the world facing a big problem on obesity, experts have conducted recent
studies that might lead to new ways of losing weight. Aside from doing physical
activities, following diet plans and undergoing liposuction to lose weight,
research shows the connection between obesity risk and environmental factors.
The usual causes of obesity include sedentary lifestyle, physical inactivity
or eating too much junk food. However, recent studies have looked into other
factors like lack of sleep and home temperature.
In a study conducted by Dr. Simona Bo and colleagues from the University of
Turin that was posted in the International Journal of Obesity, the research
involved about 1,300 middle-aged participants. They observed and monitored the
weight of the participants within 6 years, in which span of time, about 103 of
them became obese.
The researchers discovered that sleeping habits and home temperature showed
considerable contribution to obesity risk.
One finding indicated that every hour of sleep a person gets every day
decreased the risk for about 30 percent. Sleep deprivation, usually described
as sleeping for less than 6 hours a night, has also been linked to excess
weight in previous studies. Theories that support such premise include hormonal
factors and that people who sleep fewer hours tend to eat and drink more to
regain strength or energy.
Another discovery is that people who liked warmer indoor temperature during
fall and winter had twice the risk of getting obese. Dr. David B. Allison of
the Nutrition Obesity Research Center in Birmingham explained this finding as a
result of the body being capable of burning more calories when put in an
unstable room temperature.
The study meanwhile doesn?t imply that people should turn down their heaters
and also sleep more to lose weight. This just means that there may be other
alternatives that can help save people from obesity.
Aside from dieting which proves to be very hard or putting up with liposuction
which could be very inconvenient, researchers may be able to discover other
means of solving the obesity problem.
