(02-02-12) Fish Oil for Healthy ? Everything!
When itemizing all the amazing attributes of fish oil, a source of Omega 3 fatty acids, it?s clear that it is a crucial powerhouse antioxidant that you cannot afford to be without. Now that it?s winter, several of its benefits are especially helpful such as:
? Protecting your heart: People are shoveling snow in many parts of the United States now, which puts some people at higher risk for heart attack and/or stroke. Daily fish oil intake, however, can help prevent sudden cardiac death by normalizing irregular heart rhythms. It can also protect against stroke as it has a blood thinning property as well as an anti-inflammatory blood vessel effect. It also slightly lowers blood pressure which is sure to rise during heavy exertion activities like snow shoveling.
? Skin protectant: The fatty acids of fish oil act as a lubricant helping to keep skin moisturized from the inside out. The double benefit of this is that it also wards off facial fine lines and wrinkles that start to occur after age 40 especially in winter. It can also help keep the smoothness and softness in skin throughout your body as it helps retain moisture in your skin. Also be sure to drink enough water, especially during winter as dehydration can occur from colder, drier weather as easily as hot summer heat. Also, furnace heat pulls moisture out of the air.
? Membrane protectant: One of the best defenses you have against flu and cold viruses, that are more prevalent at this time of year, are the mucous membranes inside your nose. When they are in their naturally moistened state, they help filter out viruses and bacteria and impart immunoglobulin A to the air you breathe before it enters your lungs! This is a major boost to yourimmune system. Fish oil helps keep the mucous membranes of your nose and mouth at the proper level of moisture so that they can perform their natural functions appropriately. When these membranes dry out, they cannot perform their job.
? Pain reliever: Many of my over 50 age patients have some degree of joint stiffness and/or pain associated with arthritis. Though it is not an immediate pain reliever (try white willow bark), taking fish oil on a regular basis can help reduce/relieve joint pain by, again, providing extra lubrication to the joints the same as it does the skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties help cool down inflamed joints.
? Preserves eyesight: As we get older, our eyesight is not as sharp as it was when we were younger. The DHA component of fish oil significantly helps boost the DHA levels in the retina, which is 60% DHA. This helps to prevent macular degeneration and blindness. If you?ve ever driven at night in a snowstorm, you?ll thank your fish oil for helping keep your vision sharp.
? Anti-Aging: Well, this is really a yearlong protective benefit of fish oil, but it helps keep the ?telomeres? at the end of our chromosomes longer. It does this by shortening the rate in which telomeres shorten, age, or get discarded.
? Helps Your Mood: Many of my over-age 50 patients can get a touch of depression during the winter months. This is most often caused by both the lack of sunlight and colder weather combined with family holiday celebrations that occur during this time. Regular fish oil intake can improve and keep your serotonin (feel good hormones) stable and dopamine levels in your brain. It also protects against Alzheimers, bipolar disease and schizophrenia.
? Hair Health: At this time of the year, hair, like skin, can become dry, fly away and static prone. Hair loss can also be an issue. Your scalp may itch and be reddened and irritated. Fish oil can help keep your scalp and hair moisturized and smooth from the inside out.
