(25-02-12) Yoga Benefits Rheumatoid Arthritis
A new study presented at the EULAR 2011 Congress reported that people with rheumatoid arthritis who practice yoga experience significant decrease of symptoms. The study focused on 47 (26 participants and 21 controls) people out of the United Arab Emirates who practiced Raj yoga, a gentle form of yoga. The results were that the participants experienced significant improvement in their mobility and disease activity scores.
Most people with RA do not exercise due to pain. However, those with RA who do exercise experience significant decrease in pain and become more physically active. The study also showed that practicing yoga benefited people with fibromyalgia ? a chronic muscular pain syndrome ? as well. Practicing yoga was found to also decrease anxiety levels associated with the condition. Researchers hope that yoga will be further studied for its effect on improving other disease conditions.
