(26-02-12) Read, Write, Learn New Things To Prevent Alzheimers
Healthy Answers Research Team
Recent research out of University of California at Berkeley shows that people who have tried to stimulate their brains all their lives by learning new things have less beta-amyloid plaque, a buildup of protein that can lead to Alzheimer?s disease. The study shows that cognitive treatment therapies may be able to be used earlier before symptoms show up to prevent the buildup of this destructive protein.
The research shows that although stimulating the brain throughout a lifetime has a bigger effect on the prevention of the amyloid plaque buildup, which can also be influenced by genes and aging, increasing reading and writing activities at any age can help decrease it. Reading books, working crossword puzzles, learning new things like a language or even surfing the internet every day, the researchers say, can significantly help stimulate the brain and prevent the production of this plaque.
