(19-03-12) Statins Get New FDA Warning Healthy Answers Research Team
If you take a statin-type medication to lower your cholesterol, the FDA has
issued new warnings concerning their safety. The drugs listed include Lipitor,
Crestor and Zocor and their generic equivalents. The warnings now cite that
these drugs may cause memory loss and raise blood sugar levels. "The value of
statins in preventing heart disease has been clearly established," said Amy
Egan, deputy director for safety in FDA's Division of Metabolism and
Endocrinology Products. "Their benefit is indisputable, but they need to be
taken with care and knowledge of their side effects."
Another statin, Mevacor (lovastatin), has also been cited by the FDA as unsafe
to take with certain drugs used to treat HIV and bacterial/fungal infections.
Drug interaction between the drugs can result in serious muscle disease.
Tens of millions of people take statins which have been shown to reduce risk
of heart disease and heart attack. The new warnings on labels are based on the
FDA?s review of medical literature and clinical trial data of adverse events of
people who take statins.
