(29-04-12) Walk Every 20 Minutes For Better Health
Healthy Answers Research Team
A new study out of Melbourne, Australia?s Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes
Institute says getting up from your chair every 20 minutes to take a walk can
help prevent diabetes and heart disease. The study states that taking breaks
every 20 minutes to move around reduces the body?s levels of glucose and
insulin after eating. Large glucose and insulin spikes after eating are tied to
the development of diabetes and heart disease.
David Dunstan, a professor at the Baker Institute, explains: "When we sit our
muscles are in a state of disuse ? they're not contracting and helping our body
to regulate many of the body's metabolic processes." Dunstan?s group reported
earlier findings that people who watched TV for more than 4 hours a day were
likely to die earlier. The reason being prolonged sitting threw the natural
release/raise of glucose and insulin after a meal, then fall of the same, out
of whack. Inactivity makes the glucose and insulin spikes remain higher and
the body becomes less receptive to the use of insulin over time. This can
cause weight gain and type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Dunstan recommended that taking a walk around their house or office every
15-20 minutes can result in a 30% reduction in glucose and insulin levels. The
group is currently at work on longer studies to determine if this formula can
affect atherosclerosis (the hardening of arteries).
