Healthy Answers Research Team
You may have heard lately about all the health benefits of green tea.?? Now,
researchers at Penn State University have added another ? helping prevent
weight gain and aiding in weight loss. In the study, obese mice were fed a diet
high in EGCG ? a compound found in green tea ? along with a high fat diet.?
These mice were compared to the control group who did not receive the EGCG.?
The study group was found to gain weight 45% slower than the control group.? In
addition, the study group had a 30% increase in fats passed through feces ?
indicating the EGCG likely also helped limit fat absorption.???
Joshua Lambert, assistant professor of food and agricultural sciences,
explained the significance of the findings:? "First, EGCG reduces the ability
to absorb fat and, second, it enhances the ability to use fat." Lambert went on
to say that humans would need to drink 10 cups of green tea a day to get the
amount of EGCG used in the study.? However, he also explained that, ?Tea
drinkers who only consume one or more cups a day will see effects on body
weight compared to non-consumers."
