(21-05-12) Study Shows Licorice Lowers Blood Sugar
Healthy Answers Research Team
Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin,
Germany, have found that a key ingredient in licorice can lower blood sugar
levels. Belonging to a class of natural substances called amorfrutins,
licorice has been chosen as the ?Medicinal Plant 2012?. However, licorice
root, or Glycyrrhiza, has been used for centuries in tea form for calming upset
stomachs, reducing inflammation and treating airway diseases.
Researchers state that the blood-sugar lowering properties of licorice promise
a well-tolerated substance for treatment of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic
disorder syndromes. Other beneficial properties of licorice include being anti-
inflammatory and anti-fatty liver. However, researchers caution that drinking
licorice tea alone will not help treat diabetes as the concentration of the
active ingredient is too low to be effective. It has to be obtained via a
special extraction process for the specific concentration. Researchers feel
this extraction process could be done on an industrial scale and that these
extracts could also be used as prevention against certain conditions that they
also treat. Their next step is to begin testing the extracts on diabetic
patients.
