(22-05-12) Turmeric (Curcumin) Protective Post Heart Surgery
Healthy Answers Research Team
Turmeric spice extracts may ward off heart attacks in those who have had heart
surgery. These findings are from a new study out of Thailand. The anti-
inflammatory, anti-oxidant, properties of turmeric lowers the risk of heart
attack from damaged heart muscle that can occur during heart surgery from
prolonged low blood flow. Bharat Aggarwal, who studies the use of curcumins in
cancer therapy at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, said the
findings of the Thailand study were ?very, very encouraging.?
The study focused on giving 4 grams of curcumin post heart surgery to some
patients. Those who received curcumin had 13% stroke/heart attack occurrence
versus 30% in the placebo group. The team concluded that the people on
curcumins had a 65% lower chance of heart attack. Curcumin extracts have been
used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for centuries and can be bought over the
counter at health food stores. However, the researchers caution moderation in
taking curcumin extract. They do not recommend people taking 4 grams of
curcumin as it could be toxic.
