(28-05-12) New Compound In Wine, Fruits May Control Obesity
Healthy Answers Research Team
Purdue University researchers have identified another compound present in red
wine and fruits that may help control obesity. Piceatannol, a compound similar
to resveratrol, has been found to block cell processes that allow fat cells to
develop. The compound delays, and in some instances, prevents a process called
adipogenesis that allows immature fat cells to become mature fat cells.
Kee-Hong Kim, an assistant professor of food science at Purdue explained their
next step with their new findings, "We need to work on improving the stability
and solubility of piceatannol to create a biological effect. "
While resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant that helps fight heart disease,
neurologic diseases, and cancer, researchers state piceatannol may specifically
target the production of fat cells. Like resveratrol, piceatannol is found in
red wine, red grape seeds, blueberries, passion fruit and other fruits.
