(02-07-06) Nutritional, Low-Calorie Diet Keeps Heart Younger
- A nutritional, yet low-calorie diet might help keep your heart younger, longer.
In a small study, researchers studied people who consumed 1,400 to 2,000 calories a day for about six years.
The average Western diet includes 2,000 to 3,000 calories per day. Researchers say that hearts tend to stiffen and pump less effectively as people get older, but ultrasound testing showed those subjects who ate less had hearts similar to younger people.
Researchers stress that the results hinge on not only eating fewer calories, but making sure the food you do eat is highly nutritious and very low in saturated fat.
People on the lower calorie diet averaged about 1,671 calories a day. It included 23 percent protein, 49 percent complex carbohydrates, 28 percent fat, including 6 percent saturated fat.
The study was led by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the Italian National Institute of Health in Rome, Italy and published in the January 17th issue of the "Journal of the American College of Cardiology."
