(30-07-12) High Blood Pressure Linked to Insomnia
A new study out of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit has found that hypertension
? high blood pressure ? may be linked to insomnia ? the inability to sleep
well. Their study showed that the study participants with high blood pressure
were more likely to also have insomnia. The hypertension is caused by the
number of times someone wakes during the night as well as the length of time it
takes to transition from being awake to being asleep.
Christopher Drake, associate scientist at the Henry Ford Hospital Sleep
Disorders and Research Center stated, "We found that the longer it took the
subjects to fall asleep and more times they woke during the night, the more
severe their hypertension."
Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder complaint amongst Americans,
according to the National Center for Sleep Disorders Research at the National
Institute of Health. Their statistics show that between 30% and 40% of adults
report some form of insomnia and about 10% to 15% say they have chronic
insomnia. In other past studies, insomnia has also been linked to depression,
anxiety, obesity and an increased risk of death.
