(31-07-12) Prevent Lung/Other Cancers ? Eat Pistachios
Gamma tocopherol forms of Vitamin E have been associated with lowered risk of
cancer. Pistachios contain a high amount of this type of Vitamin E, a known
antioxidant, and so researchers at Texas Women?s University in Houston state
that eating two daily servings (2 ounces) of pistachios may help decrease risk
of developing lung and prostate cancers. Pistachios also have a cholesterol
lowering effect and may help to reduce heart disease as well.
The study was conducted over 6 weeks to determine if gamma tocopherol form of
Vitamin E would be increased significantly by the consumption of daily servings
of pistachios. At the 3-4 week mark, researchers found a significant increase
in the amount of gamma tocopherol in the pistachio eating group as compared to
the no-pistachio control group. The study?s lead researcher, Ladia M.
Hernandez, M.S., R.D., L.D., explained, ?Pistachios are one of those 'good-for-
you' nuts, and 2 ounces per day could be incorporated into dietary strategies
designed to reduce the risk of lung cancer without significant changes in body
mass index.?
