(09-08-12) Omega-3 Fats Lowers
Regular, daily intake of Omega-3?s can fight the inflammation that occurs with
obesity and protect against certain illnesses. Inflammation accompanies body
fat and can set other diseases in motion like heart disease, Type 2 diabetes,
arthritis, and Alzheimer's disease. In addition, inflammation can contribute
to the frailty and functional decline that can accompany aging.
The 4-month long study showed that markers for inflammation ? especially a
protein present in heart disease ? decreased about 10% in the overweight
participants who were given Omega-3 supplements. ?Omega-3 fatty acids may be
both protective so that inflammation doesn't go up, as well as therapeutic by
helping inflammation go down," said Jan Kiecolt-Glaser, professor of psychiatry
and psychology at Ohio State University and lead author of the study.
The study represents the first time that Omega-3 supplementation leads to
changes in inflammation markers in overweight, but otherwise healthy
individuals. It suggests a way to keep overweight people healthy.
