(10-11-12) Caffeinated Coffee Ups Glaucoma Risk
A new study published in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science
reveals that heavy caffeinated coffee consumption could raise your risk of
vision loss or blindness. The research was done out of Brigham and Women?s
Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and was based on the premise that
Scandinavian peoples ? who have the highest caffeinated coffee drinking rates
in the world ? also have the highest rates of exfoliation syndrome and
glaucoma.
The results showed that people who drank 3 or more cups of caffeinated coffee
a day were at increased risk for developing exfoliation glaucoma or glaucoma
suspect. The researchers did not find an association between other caffeinated
products like chocolate, tea, soda, or with decaffeinated coffee. People with
a family history of glaucoma were at even higher risk.
Lead researcher Jae Hee Kang, ScD, commented, ?Confirmation of these results
in other populations would be needed to lend more credence to the possibility
that caffeinated coffee might be a modifiable risk factor for glaucoma. . .
It may also lead to research into other dietary or lifestyle factors as risk
factors,? said Kang.
