(06-12-12) Exercise Reduces Heart Damage Caused By Type 2 Diabetes
The cardiovascular system of people with type 2 diabetes, age faster than those who do not have the condition. Yet, research out of the University of Colorado School of Medicine has shown that exercise helps slow down this cardiovascular aging in type 2 diabetes to a more normal, non-type 2 state. In general, people lose about 10% of fitness with each decade of life past age 40-50. In people with type 2 diabetes, fitness level loss is much worse than this, starting even as early as adolescence. This group of people not only has loss of fitness but loss of ability to do even simple activities of daily living ? like just walking somewhere. This loss of fitness increases the risk of mortality as well as early disability.
However, researchers say that exercise can reverse this negative downward trend in people with type 2 diabetes. After just 12-20 weeks, fitness levels can improve by as much as 40%. The researchers recommend that people with diabetes get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week ? that?s 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week.
