(16-01-13) Grow Smarter In Middle Age- Exercise!
Healthy Answers Research Team
A new joint study out of the Montreal Heart Institute, the University of Montreal and the Montreal Geriatric Institute, has revealed that high intensity interval exercise in middle-aged people improved their intelligence as well as their health. The participants all had a BMI (body mass index) of 28 to 31 which is overweight in addition to one or more other cardiovascular risk factors. High intensity interval training involves doing 30 seconds of intense exercise like sprinting, jumping jacks, bicycling, etc, followed by 30 seconds of slower paced walking or jogging.
The participants were studied for a 4 month program of twice weekly interval training as well as twice weekly resistance training. Post exercise showed that the cognitive function of the participants had greatly improved as compared to their pre exercise levels. The researchers felt this was a result of the increased oxygenation of brain tissues during the intense interval exercise. In addition, trunk fat and waist circumference had decreased while insulin sensitivity significantly increased.
Decreased insulin sensitivity frequently begins to occur in middle-age with an increased risk for weight gain ? especially that around the waist ? type 2 diabetes and the complications of it. The researchers concluded that many middle-aged people?s cognitive function, as well as physical health, could benefit from this type of interval/resistance training program.
