(27-01-13) Chronic Inflammation Causes Leukemia
Healthy Answers Research Team
Medical researchers have known for some time that chronic inflammation can
result in cancer, but just how it occurred was not known. A new study out of
Ohio State University?s Comprehensive Cancer Center has now identified a
specific hormone-like substance that, in high levels, can cause an aggressive
form of leukemia (blood cancer). This substance, IL-15 (interleukin 15) gets
produced when the body creates inflammation in an attempt to heal itself from
invading agents (bacteria, virus, fungi, toxins, etc).
However, if the exposure to the invading agent becomes chronic, inflammation
continues and high levels of IL-15 can then result in a deadly form of leukemia
? LGL (large granulocytic leukemia). The cancer occurs when the high IL-15
levels ?turn on? Myc (mick), cancer-causing proteins, within cells. These
proteins then cause DNA gene mutations to start occurring and cancer develops.
On the bright side, the researchers have also developed a treatment for LGL
that, to date, have shown no side effects in the animals tested. The
researchers feel that finding this road to one cancer will help them learn how
to stop the cancer-causing process from developing and treating already
existing cancers.
